Increasing Question Visibility

New 06 Jun 2011 Asked by dukkhasatva 0 Comments

Now that there are some meta-questions asked, how many of the tumblr questions you receive get answered here? Is there an increase in questions asked? (curious now that none of my questions make it through lately after a time where all of them were featured) For a less meta question, was there any particular reason the upcomming Commander also has enemy-pair legends? My guess is that otherwise UG would've had less commanders than the wedges =)

The whole process is snowballing. In the beginning I got a few questions a day and I answered them. But now that people see I’ll answer questions, I’m getting many more a day. As my time to answer them hasn’t gone up, it means I have to pick and choose which questions I answer. If you want to increase me answering a question, here are some tips: 1) Ask one question. I try to answer what is asked in the questions I answer so when you ask multiple questions it makes it harder for me to answer it. 2) Keep it short. I’m trying to make my tumblr a good read. Part of doing this is keeping everything bite size. I try to keep my answers short (obviously, I go longer when I have to) and like choosing questions that get to the point. 3) Try to ask a question I haven’t already answered. Since I only get a few questions a day, I try to answer new things rather than rehash old things. This doesn’t mean follow-up questions aren’t good. 4) Be nice. This is generally a good tip of having someone pay attention to you.  I do read every question, by the way, so if your point is just giving me feedback, that is also a fine way to use the “questions”. Just don’t expect those to get answered as much. Now to answer the other question asked: (see why I like single topic questions) The reason we put some enemy-pair legendary creatures in Magic the Gathering: Commander decks is because that was the second most requested type of legendary creatures and we wanted to use the product to make as many different Commander players as happy as we could.

Managing Time and Feedback

How do you find the time to read all of the tweets, e-mails, tumblr questions, and general feedback that we as players send you, while still having a family and a life outside of Magic? Are you secretly Superman and you just routinely turn back time by make Earth spin backwards?

I am just a mild-mannered card designer.  How do I find time to read everything? It’s just something I prioritize because it’s so important to doing my job well. Remember that my job boiled down is making all of you happy. Not reading what you all think is the much larger time waster.

Block Planning Process

New 03 Jun 2011 Asked by stidjen-blog1 0 Comments

When you have a new idea for a block, do you make a plan of sorts when you pitch it? How much time would such a plan of approach generally take, and how big is it?

Once I get a plan for a block, I then have to present it to various other people and essentially sell it to them. Part of doing that is breaking down how exactly the block theme will play out in each set. For example, I sold Scars block as such. Scars of Mirrodin: we revisit a popular world but we learn that something sinister has festered since we were last here. Mirrodin Besieged: The Mirrans learn of the existence of the Phyrexians and the two sides go to war. New Phyrexia: We learn who won the war and see how the Phyrexians have converted Mirrodin into New Phyrexia. Different blocks take different amounts of time to plan. Part of it depends on how long I take to come up with the idea and part of it depends on how much I have to make changes based on the feedback I get.
