Case of the Gateway Express

White Effect Puzzle

I'm fascinated by Case of the Gateway Express - it's a very fun card, almost like a white Bite! Can you explain what this type of effect is called, and how it fits into white's color pie?

We don’t really have a name for it yet. Dealing damage equal to your number of creatures used to be red, but red never used it, and it’s a fun effect, so a few years ago we moved it to white. This is a riff on that.

Waitwaitwaitwaitwait - Is Case of the Gateway Express a nod to Murder on the Orient Express where each suspect (each creature) has a take on the murder (deal demage to target creature)? 😱

There are a lot of nods to a lot of famous mysteries. : )

can you send some high fives for whoevee designed case of the gateway express? its etb is an effect white has effectively had for awhile but making the creatures themselves desl the damage opens it up to a lot of new interesting synergies, like with deathtouchers, as well as being more flavorful for white. great card design all around

Glad you like it.
