Card Fronts

DFCs Printing Process

New 27 Dec 2023 Asked by gatoroboto 31 Comments

I'm sure this has been answered (apologies!) but why it is that DFCs require their own sheet? Is the technology for printing standard magic backs different than a variety of backs?

Magic backs aren’t printed the way we print fronts of cards. The backs of double-faced cards are. This requires us to print double-faced cards differently than single-faced cards.

Reverse Magic Origins

Hello Mark,I liked the theme of planeswalkers losing their sparks in Aftermath. Was there ever any thought about making “reverse” magic origins-style planeswalkers? (A planeswalker on the card front transforming into a creature on the card back)As far as we know, other planeswalkers are bound to lose their spark in the future, so Is that concept something Set Design might be interested to do?Thanks for reading!

We wanted to be consistent with how we did the desparked planeswalkers between sets, and not all sets have DFCs.

There will be legendary creatures in other sets that are desparked planeswalkers, and we wanted them treated the same, and not every set has DFCs.

Can I get a maybe on a set where all of the card backs are on the front, and all of the card fronts are on the back?

You act as if we don’t do that every other set. : )

Any thoughts on putting the front of the card on the back?

We do that every other set. : )

Nightbound on Card Front

Nightbound *could* appear on the front sides of cards, right?

It’s technically possible, but highly unlikely in a set with day and night.

Using Cards as Tokens

New 14 Jan 2018 Asked by tmzerozero-blog 28 Comments

Using cheatyfaces/armchairs to represeng tokens is perfectly legal, right?(assuming you don't try to cheat the real deal on the battlefield from outside your hand.)

Using real Magic card fronts to be tokens is not actually allowed.

Changes to Card Back

You get a lot of questions about the fronts of cards, here's one about the back: if you didn't have to worry about affecting metagame, would you change anything about the back of the cards? Add or subtract anything?

Numerous things. I’d update the logo and change it to a copyright from a trademark. I’d get rid of Deckmaster. And I’d remove the accidental own mark.
