Thunder Spirit

Thunder Spirit Situation

New 09 Nov 2022 Asked by bored-umm 21 Comments

Hey Mark, has any thought been given recently to the Thunder Spirit problem?

It’s not really a problem. There’s just not a lot of desire to make that combination of abilities and stats at that cost. Creatures have just gotten better since then.

Potential for Card Reprint

New 08 May 2022 Asked by paragonoflife-blog 25 Comments

Could a white flying first striker a la thunder spirit be reprinted in a draft environment?

We can’t reprint that card exactly, but it’s easy to tweak. I’m not sure what draft has to do with the issue.

'Thunder Spirit' and Reserve List

New 08 Aug 2021 Asked by popcornbunni 32 Comments

Would a 2W flying first strike 2/2 in white violate the reserve list, or not, since it isn't exactly functionally identical to Thunder Spirit? (Devotion makes it not quite strictly better)

It would not.

Bounding the Reserved List

New 08 Aug 2021 Asked by dalenthas 38 Comments

How different does a card have to be to skirt the Reserved List? Could a Thunder Spirit with a different name and creature type cost 2W or WWW be printable?

If you change the cost, it’s a new card and the Reserved List doesn’t apply. Changing the creature type is a little more of a gray area. If it was mechanically relevant, it would probably be okay.

Avoiding Reserve List Copies

Have you ever accidentally almost made a functional reprint of a card on the reserve list? I feel Thunder Spirit could be a potential risk.

We’ve come close.

Reserved List Policy

New 21 Sep 2015 Asked by frosty-mage-stuff 37 Comments

Maro, I highly recommend rereading the official reprint policy; many of your answers regarding it contradict what the actual policy says. It only applies to tournament-legal physical cards. Additionally, with cards like thunder spirit, you can in fact reprint them with the subtype changed; the policy explicitly allows this.

We have made a conscious effort to uphold the spirit of the Reserved List and not just “the letter of the law”.

The Reserved List Decision

New 08 Jun 2015 Asked by thewonderdoc-deactivated2020013 18 Comments

Why was the decision made to put Thunder Spirit on the reserved list? It's fairly decent for limited, probably around high/middle uncommon level. Otherwise weak and unplayable in any other format. The creature types are not super relevant and if it's the card name/anything specific about Thunder spirit itself why does it prevent a functional reprint? I asked myself this about a few cards while checking out the reserved list.

It was a rare and for some odd reason wasn’t saved in the 20% we could reprint.

Thunder Spirit Dilemma

Have you ever designed a white French vanilla creature for a set only to realize it's a functional reprint of Thunder Spirit and thus can't be included?

Yep.

Aven Sunstriker Design

New 05 Mar 2015 Asked by calintares 35 Comments

Could Aven Sunstriker have been a 2/2 with Flying, first strike and Megamorph or would that be too close to Thunder Spirit?

Only exactly Thunder Spirit is too close to Thunder Spirit.

Manifest Mechanics

New 10 Jan 2015 Asked by lrmo 15 Comments

Could there be a version of lightform that grants flying and first strike to a manifested creature? Or would that be skirting too close to Thunder Spirit?

There’s no Reserved List issues. Similar is not the same.

Alternate Reality Humor

What is life like in the alternate reality where Thunder Spirit was never put on the reserve list?

It’s a Utopia with birds singing and world peace. : )

Reserved List Spirit

New 24 Aug 2014 Asked by daemonaeon 28 Comments

You talk about how the spirit of it shouldn't be broken by not making a functional reprint of something on the list. But isn't the "spirit" of the Reserve List for collectors to retain the value of those cards? If so, then why do you let simple cards like Thunder Spirit that would have a benefit for reprinting (or functionally reprinting) hold you guys back since the value of it is not very significant anyway?

One of the reasons I don’t like the Reserved List is because in many cases it’s having the opposite effect of what it was created to do.

Reserved List Frustration

New 24 Aug 2014 Asked by calintares 61 Comments

Have you ever tried to put in a 2/2 flying first strike for 3 into a set and realized you can't because Thunder Spirit is on the reserved list

I have. It might be the most frustrating card on the Reserved List for simple design reasons.

Thunder Spirit Frustration

New 05 Oct 2013 Asked by tshawnytscha 15 Comments

As a designer, is Thunder Spirit the most randomly annoying card to have on the reserve list? It seems like it would be a useful addition to a lot of sets as a common/uncommon.

It’s very annoying, yes.

Reserve List Background

New 23 Mar 2013 Asked by quantumecho-deactivated20130825 11 Comments

I'm sure you get tons of questions about the Reserve List, but I had some queries about its history that you hopefully haven't seen a million times. Can you tell us under what circumstances the Reserve List was created, and maybe give us some background into the decision? Why are some cards that are fairly balanced by today's standards and aren't particularly valuable (things like Thunder Spirit and Aeoliphile) on the List? Thanks!

The Reserved List came about in reaction to the release of Chronicles and Fourth Edition edition back in 1995. Both sets included cards that previously were very hard to obtain. Many players complained and Wizards in response made the Reserved List as a promise that they wouldn’t do this again. The Reserved List was all the rare cards from the sets at the time (and also the uncommons of the core set but those later got removed) that had not yet been reprinted. Wizards at the time then promised that each year they would tag a certain percentage of the rare cards (80% is my memory) and those cards would be added to the list. The 20% that wasn’t added were cards that were allowed to be reprinted. Right before Mercadian Masques came out, Wizards said they were stopping the adding of cards to the Reserved List. Note that the 20% were cards Wizards at the time believed were reprint able, but other than that the cards on the Reserved List weren’t about power level but rarity.
