Soul Warden vs Attendant

New 07 Mar 2017 Asked by doctor-fragenstien 34 Comments

I know you don't have much influence with Modern Masters, but do you know why Soul Warden was reprinted instead of Soul's Attendant? What factors go into reprinting one of two functionally identical cards?

Soul’s Warden effect is mandatory while Soul’s Attendant is optional which means Soul’s Warden works better in digital as there aren’t triggers you can respond to.

Norin Sisters Deck

I don't know how much you look at deck lists, but it might hearten you to know that there's a deck in Modern that revolves around Norin the Wary. It's called Norin Sisters and it uses Soul Warden and Soul's Attendant (and sometimes Auriok Champion--the Sisters, from the Soul Sisters deck) to gain tons of life every end step, triggering Ajani's Pridemate and Champion of the Parish, and sometimes Genesis Chamber as well.

That does warm my heart. Go Norin!

Soul's Attendant Reasoning

What's the point of making a card like Soul's Attendant that is just a renamed Soul Warden? Flavor purposes?

Soul’s Attendant was a version of Soul Warden where the effect was optional (it said “may”) rather than mandatory. At the time, we were making effects like that optional because we thought it would help with judging.
