Mox Opal

Legendary Cards Restriction

New 02 Dec 2019 Asked by finalrevenge 32 Comments

hey i dunno if its a big discussion lately, but granted the power level of these hefty things like oko, hogaak, urza, wrenn, etc. ... why don’t we just have a new rule where legendary cards are restricted, aka 1-of to a deck? such as mox opal, karn, etc. !

That’s how legendary cards originally worked. It made the games too swingy, so it was changed (restricting cards ups the variance in the game significantly).

If you changed the rules for legendary, cards like Isamaru, Thalia, Guardian of Thraben and Mox Opal would cease to be made. They only work because you are limited to one copy in play. I strongly believe that Legendary is a tool that lets you increase the power level of cards by restricting the number of copies that can be in play.

I would make a Unique keyword for cards that need the restriction, but it’s a tiny percentage of current Legendary cards.

Mox Opal Keywords

Why does Mox Opal Masterpiece use Metalcraft, but inventor's Fair does not? If Ability Words have no meaning, why are they in oracle text?

We have different rules about where and how we use keywords. Masterpiece cards show up at a low enough frequency that we aren’t concerned with vocabulary issues for newer players.

New Mox Possibility

Do you think we could ever see a new Mox? We haven't had one since Mox Opal nearly 6 years go. I imagine they are tricky to develop but players love them.

They are very tricky to develop, maybe even impossible. I’m sure we’ll keep trying though so there’s always hope.
