Butcher of the Horde

Demon Color Identity

New 02 Dec 2015 Asked by akyrimos 52 Comments

Butcher of the Horde is the only demon with white in its casting cost. Rakshasa Deathdealer/Visier are the only demons with green in their casting cost. What decisions led to expanding demons into these colors? Why was the creature type demon chosen for Butcher instead of say, giant?

We allow creatures to dip in multicolor as long as their main color is present. That’s a far cry from a monoWhite or monoGreen Demon.

Iconic Creatures Color Shift

How do you feel about iconic creatures that venture out of their representative color? (like Medomai, Butcher of the Horde, Aurelia, etc)

As a very infrequent thing, I like it.

Butcher of the Horde is the first demon that's White. How can a demon be white, flavorfully?

It’s not monowhite.

Butcher of the Horde Origin

Is there a story behind Butcher of the Horde? You've mentioned before that (non-Cat) Demons weren't in Tarkir until much later in the process. Was Butcher of the Horde a card originally designed as something else, or did development add it much later?

In early development, the only demons were the rakshasas. Development talked with the creative team about how we were low with iconics and they decided to add in traditional demons. No one ever went back to rediscuss the Tombstalker discussion.
