Unflinching Courage

Reprints vs New Versions

New 30 Jun 2013 Asked by fezzhead 7 Comments

What are the most common reasons why old cards get newer versions rather than straight reprints? For example, Unflinching Courage vs. Armadillo Cloak.

There are a variety of reasons. Unflinching Courage was us wanting to put lifelink on the card and Armadillo Cloak had something close to lifelink but not exactly lifelink.

Was Unflinching Courage ever just Armadillo Cloak in the file?

Yes, it was. It was even about to get art for Armadillo Cloak when Aaron Forsythe pointed out that we had to change it because Armadillo Cloak doesn’t actually have lifelink but a similar ability.

Lifelink vs Lifegain

So I checked armadillo cloak to compare it to unflinching courage, and now I wonder the difference between lifelink and the lifegain on armadillo cloak.

There are a few things. The biggest was that you could put Armadillo Cloak on your opponent’s creature to stop it from essentially harming you. (Technically it damaged you and you gained the life back.) Unflinching Courage (and lifelink auras in general) cannot do that.

Whats with unflinching courage? Why not just reprint armadillo cloak?

Two reasons: 1) Aramdillo Cloak doesn’t technically have lifelink and we wanted to be able to write lifelink on the card. 2) The creative team wasn’t happy with it. Back in the day we used to do a littler sillier creative and we’ve shifted a since since then.

Was the playtest name for Unflinching Courage "Updated Armadillo Cloak"?
