Read-ahead Mechanic Feedback

Mark, can I provide some (a bit critical) constructive feedback about Read-ahead?I recently cut all Read Ahead sagas from my cube. While I love the idea and was excited to include some of the cards in my environment, the execution of the mechanic proved to be lacking. The fact that the reminder text for read-ahead was the only thing that signified this rather huge difference between these sagas and traditional ones, as well as the fact that the reminder text for Read-ahead was placed right where the reminder text for what Sagas are is on other sagas (with most players just skipping that part completely) made it a huge problem – even after I cut all non-read-ahead sagas from my cube!My drafters would frequently forget about Read-ahead and make suboptimal plays – even experienced players who were familiar with the cards would do that. The final nail in the coffin was when one of my drafters who goes to championships and whatnot Thoughtseized me, saw Founding the Third Path in my hand, and took something else because he forgot I can drop it with 3 counters and Bolt his face. I guess the mechanic needed some sort of a visual reminder alongside the reminder text, something to distinguish these sagas from regular ones, much like DFC have a little symbol that signifies they are double faced. The play patterns are far too different for the frames of these sagas to be treated as regular sagas. Have you had a similar assessment over at WotC?

Here’s the problem. Players like when we find new tweaks to old game elements. We do it all the time. If we added a visual component each time we did it, it would start to make the frames feel more cluttered, and could possibly cause confusion over time (as we get enough of them), so we’re careful about when to add new visual elements. We do it, but we’re cautious. Read ahead Sagas didn’t cross the line for us. If you read them wrong, you just play sub-optimally, you’re not doing something the card can’t do. For example, it wouldn’t cause a game loss in a competitive tournament. Maybe we were wrong. How do others feel about this topic?
