Zero Toughness Creatures

If or when: more creatures with zero toughness? (“Force of Savagery” is one of my favorite cards!!!)

If. It tends to confuse players.

On Cards That Don't Work Alone

New 05 Sep 2020 Asked by myheartgoesoontz 37 Comments

"Players assume cards can work on their own" - historically, though, you've printed a number of cards that *don't* work on their own. Not every set, but every once in a while. Force of Savagery, for instance, dies immediately when cast if you don't have the appropriate support. One with Nothing is another example of a card that on paper, is strictly downside.

And we do those kinds of cards very infrequently.

Quirky Creatures in Standard

i have been playing magic for years, i have seen alot of cool ideas go and pass. but may i ask, will we ever see cards like the following: Force of Savagery (aka a creature with 0 toughness but no way to pump itself or clone a creature), Nameless Race (aka a creature with no creature types) or Spinal Parasite (aka a creature minus power and/or toughness) in standard?

We continue to do quirky creatures from time to time.

Is Force of Savagery still considered a french vanilla?

Absolutely. It has no rules text but a creature keyword.

Confusion vs Challenge

"We try not to print cards that just confuse people. We make cards that make players figure how best to use them not how to use them." um, Force of Savagery? One With Nothing?

Notice how the cards you named are things we’ve done once and only once. We do occasionally do offbeat cards for players to figure out but we have to be careful to print things that don’t have players assuming we made a printing error.

Narrow Card Love

Read your column about bad cards today. Regarding point number six, I think you'll like to hear I'm playing a Modern deck built around Force of Savagery :>

I love making cards that are very narrow but embraced by certain players. Force of Savagery is definitely one of those cards. When I created the card in Future Sight, there was a lot of argument about whether or not it should see print, but I fought for it because I knew someone was out there like you that would love it.

What do you think of the card 'Force of Savagery'? Is there any chance that there will be more cards similar to this, or is this a one of?

I’m glad we made the first one. I’m not sure what the second one adds to Magic.

Zero Toughness Creature

Would a creature with zero toughness that didn't enter the battlefield with +1/+1 counters (or similar) be effective design space? Maybe it could be overpowered but require an anthem or Lord effect to survive summoning.

We’ve already made the card. It’s called Force of Savagery. It’s an 8/0 for 2G. It was in Future Sight.

Force of Savagery

Why do you guys make cards like Force of Savagery? It dies immediately when you put it into play (Unless you had some sort of creature buffer enchanment out).

The great thing about Magic design is that we get to break our rules from time to time. Force of Savagery was a special quirky card. It’s not something we should do often, but once in eighteen years seems okay.
