Chameleon Colossus Preview Error

New 10 Jul 2018 Asked by dispel-for-the-win 35 Comments

Hi Maro. In Narrative Equity you tell the story about previewing Chameleon Colossus, and you said it happened at the 2011 World Championships. However, Chameleon Colossus was released in Morningtide, the winter 2008 set, so did you mean to say the 2007 or 2008 World Championships?

It would have been the 2007 Worlds.

Record Damage Attack

"What's the most damage you've ever attacked for if you remember?" "I do remember. 27,648 damage done by Chameleon Colossus in a multi-player free-for-all side event at the 2007 Magic World Championships in New York City." Don't forget the best part: you did this before Chameleon Colossus was even a publicly released card!

Yes. Each R&D member had one preview card in their deck we were supposed to show off at the event. Mission accomplished! : )

FTV Doubling Suggestions

What cards would be in FTV: Doubling? Off the top of my head all I can think of is Doubling Season and Parallel Lives, and those two are almost the same card.

A few off the top of my head: • Furnace of Rath • Chameleon Colossus • Doubling Cube  • Goblin Charbelcher • Kalonian Hydra • Solarian • Beacon of Immortality • Evolution Vat • Game of Chaos • Gratuitous Violence • Inquisitor’s Flail

Design vs Costing

New 08 Dec 2012 Asked by mrtickles22 2 Comments

Re design costing stuff: So do you know when something is going to be amazing? Could Chameleon colossus have cost 5GG and some random expensive timmy Giant 4R in an alternate universe?

I don’t know power level because that’s not relevant in design. I do care about color and the mechanic and how it plays.

Card Costing Process

New 06 Dec 2012 Asked by mrtickles22 1 Comments

So if the way that costs are assigned is that you yell out to a guy "cost this, yo!" Does that mean that you have no idea whether a card will actually be good or okay or terrible? Like, Chameleon Colossus could have cost seven for all you know? Are there any recent cards that you made that ended up either terrible or amazing after you passed it on because of this? Was Chimney imp once costed at 2B or something?

Design does not concern itself with how powerful something is. We give it a cost so we can play it and we try to get in the ballpark so we have a rough idea what the card will play like but the fine tuning of the power is done in development after we’ve handed off the file.
