Canopy Cover

Flying in Green Color

New 16 Oct 2021 Asked by havensglow-reblogs 35 Comments

Which part of flying is green not supposed to get, the offense or defense part?
Green seems to be allowed strong on-creature evasion, but also gets a lot of reach.
Are things like Canopy Cover and Silhana Ledgewalker alright in green?

The offense part is the problem. Pseudo-flying (rules text that acts like flying, but isn’t called flying) shouldn’t be in green.

Faux Flying Mechanics

If Orchard Spirit had flying, it could block other flyers. Same for Silhana Ledgewalker, creatures with a Canopy Cover aura, and so on. If the same cards said "Yeah, by the way, they also have Reach", it would be faux-flying. Without Reach... is it really not a big enough difference?

Green has the ability to block fliers. That’s in green’s slice of the pie. What Green is supposed to get very infrequently and only at higher rarities is the offensive part of flying. That’s why faux flying in Green is a problem.
