Spitting Dilophosaurus

Counters Interaction Logic

Why do positive and negative P/T counters remove each other? You have a 2/2 creature with a +1/+1 counter on it. I play Spitting Dilophosaurus, targeting your creature, put a -1/-1 counter on it. Spitting says “Creatures your opponents control with -1/-1 counters on them can’t block.” Can your creature block? Yes, according to 122.3. Why don’t counters cancel each other out without being removed? Shouldn’t you have the opportunity (e.g., Ferropede) to remove my -1/-1 and turn that +1/+1 back on?

Counters cancel each other out because it simplifies tracking what’s going on.

Hi Mark! I have to say I'm really pleasantly surprised by the new Massacre Girl. I thought that after you stated that the design team soured on -1/-1 counters we would've seen them only as extras like Spitting Dilophosaurus. I hope it will be included in your card by card article, I'm really curious to learn how it came to be.

It’s a short story. Someone designed it and it was a really cool design. We liked enough to decide to let it be a one-of. Our use of cameos has been changing a little what we’ll do at high rarities as a one-of.
