Bronzebeak Moa

Non-flying Birds

Even with the cartoon it's referencing, was there a worry that Resilient Roadrunner leads to the Bronzebeak Moa problem that players might think it has flying?

Just last week, I said we one day might try a non-flying Bird. : )

Birds Without Flight

You mentioned before that Bronzebeak Moa ran into the problem that people expected it to have flying because it was a bird despite Moas being flightless. Do you think a card depicting a more famously flightless bird like an Ostrich or Penguin would have the same problem?

Yes. Not enough players knew that moas don’t fly. Chances are much better with an ostrich or a penguin.

Flightless Bird Cards

"kerning-pete asked: Flightless birds like ostriches and penguins: if or when? If." You've made Bronzebeak Moa and Hunting Moa sad :(

Those are flightless birds like moas. : )

You did print a bird known for its inability to fly - Bronzebeak Moa

Most people don’t know what a moa is, let alone a flightless bird.

Bronzebeak Moa Confusion

Do you think that if Bronzebeak Moa was instead Bronzebeak Ostrich players would have been less confused as to whether it flies or not?

Definitely. Zero doubt in my mind.

Penguins vs Moas

"[Penguins] are one of the few birds though that could not have flying and not confuse the majority of players." Didn't you also think that about Moas before Bronzebeak Moa in DGM.

No, I didn’t. I thought using moas was a mistake and evidence proved me correct.

Moa Bird Clarification

Just a rebuttal/reassurance to your previous answer to Bronzebeak Moa: Actual moa (now extinct) were flightless! As flightless as penguins. So I, and my fellow New Zealanders, saw no mistake there. :)

My issue isn’t that moas are flightless. My issue is that most players won’t know moas are flightless and the lack of flying on birds will cause confusion. So I’m not saying make moas fly, I’m saying not to use moas.

Bronzebeak moa doesn't fly and it's a bird on a card

It snuck through. It was a mistake.

To the "All birds fly" question from earlier you responded with modern ones did, but I am pretty sure Bronzebeak Moa was RTR.

That card being a moa is considered a mistake. Also, for me Dragon’s Maze was a long time ago.

Birds in Modern Magic

MARO "Not all birds fly but they do in Magic." Wait but what about hunting moa and bronzebeak Moa are you saying they've been erratad to non birds?

I was talking about modern day Magic. Right now when we design birds, they fly. Hunting Moa is a great example of a card that confused a lot of players because they assumed it flew.

Flying Exceptions

"All creatures with wings in Magic fly because enough players assume they do." What about bronzebeak moa?

It confused players. Things with wings should fly.

Nonflying Birds Feedback

Re: nonflying birds. How did bronzebeak moa do? My playgroup is quite fond of the golden c̶h̶i̶c̶k̶e̶n̶s̶ ostrich-things.

They’re proof that we do do them on rare occasion. They didn’t cause too much problem.
